Media Artist Secrets TV #1 – We Teach What We Need To Learn

I have always wanted to do a video version of my Media Artist Secrets podcast. This new video show will cover a lot of the ideas and concepts from the blog but also branch off into new directions. The show will feature creative career development and inspiration, cool guests, new thoughts and ideas. Join the conversation by leaving a comment, let me know what you think.

Franklin McMahon Show – Episode 1 – We Teach What We Need To Learn

I will also be looking for guests to interview in the coming weeks, if you are interested, leave a comment with your links. The show will be a work in progress, but I will work to make it informative and fun.

Thanks for checking it out.

You can also watch the show in HD on Facebook or YouTube

This will be a podcast too for all the podcast fans out there. Not sure if I will move the video shows into the audio feed…might be better to start a new iTunes/podcast feed with just the video episodes in it. Hmmm…

    Hey Franklin,

I was just listening to some of your audio podcasts the other day.

    Good advice never grows old!!

Looking forward to the new video shows here at Shut Up Fool in the U.K.

    All the best

Thanks Pete! Yeah I try to make Media Artist Secret shows that are “timeless” so the advice can be used now or 5 years from now. And actually good advice usually ages well ;)

Just watched The Franklin McMahon Show – Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace. Nicely done, sir, and it makes me nostalgic for all those times you gave me media advice in person, and even then you would also periodically hold up a fish. But as to learning from teaching: absolutely. I’m currently teaching writing and story structure to 12- to 14-year olds this summer, and I learn both from the students and their questions as well as by my own interpretation and presentation of the material. Good luck on future episodes (oops, dare I say… “webisodes?”) and keep tossing out those tips.

If anyone wants to quickly test this theory, I would suggest getting an intern. It does not matter what level you are on, interns are always ready to learn and it’s a great way to get sharp with teaching as an introductory phase. I’ve had interns that I have learned so much from.

Glad you liked the show. I neglected to mention the name of the fish was “Harry Potter”, instead I inferred that it was actually him.

No I did not cast a spell on the lovable wizard character.

    Hey Frank!

I’ve always wanted you to do a Media Artist Secrets show on working creatively yet collaboratively. I’ve found that as a digital artist, we may work for a long time as lone wolves, and even develop workflow habits that funnel us into roles where we work alone. Perhaps, we get used to working alone so much, that we’ll only seek positions were we have be bothered least by other people!

But some of the greatest creative products are done in groups, like movies or big projects within a firm. And for me especially, I find it stifling to work with other people because I don’t know how to be firm AND flexible and I end up doing all the work myself or none at all. It’s as equally difficult to take pride in work we don’t have an equal share of responsibility in as it is not to develop spite towards co-workers for not pulling their weight. Eventually, I fear one might burn out of the creative industry for the wrong reasons!

Thanks! Love the show, please keep it up. I’ve been listening since 2005, and even stayed with you when I was abroad in China for 9 months.

    Your fan,

    Pat

    Hey Pat,

Thanks for the comment, glad you are sticking with the show :)

Yeah I think the collaborative thing is often over looked, I just did a post today on collaborating with others when you need a skill that you are not good with. Surrounding yourself with talented people, sometimes even more talented than yourself, is always a good thing.

Good suggestion..creatively yet collaboratively…I am adding it to the list…
