New Episodes of “Ask Franklin” from Focal Press
Very happy to announce that I am working with Focal Press to bring you new episodes of “Ask Franklin”, the advice show that covers a wide variety of topics and is focused on developing your creative career. Look for the clips on many Focal Press websites including “Mastering Film“.
Editing “The Social Network” in Final Cut Pro with Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter
Angus Wall and Kirk Baxter have collaborated with director David Fincher several times before on movies such as “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button” and “Zodiac,” but it’s a safe bet neither has seen such momentum and critic/audience praise as the work they did on editing “The Social Network.” The film has been nominated for an Oscar for editing, and both are happy to have contributed to creating a quite remarkable film.
I had a chance to talk with them for a feature article as well as audio interview. We chatted about handling dozens of takes, working with David Fincher, their favorite scenes from the movie “The Social Network”, incorporating the music of Trent Reznor and if they are nervous about Oscar night.
Five Steps to Successful Podcasting and iTunes Marketing
One of the biggest avenues for a creative content producer is iTunes. With millions of users around the world, it’s available in dozens of countries, and the reach is tremendous. You can get your podcasts, video, music, books, audio and more out to the masses fairly easily. I’ve been producing podcasts for several years now, such as “Media Artist Secrets,” “Rumor Girls Uncut” and many others for various clients. The process and the steps have changed a bit, and while it is still somewhat of a mystery why some shows get featured and others don’t, there are definitely some steps you can take to help rise to the top.
Dropbox Review
Dropbox is one of those handy inventions where the more you use it, the more you come up with reasons to use it. Now if you don’t have access to an online server to share your movie clips and graphics, this just might be the next best thing. Dropbox is a cloud-based file sharing service that syncs file across all your computers, supporting Windows, Mac and Linux. It works with files (video, graphics, text, anything) of any size, and it syncs automatically whenever a new file appears or a change is detected. Best of all, it’s free for a 2GB account.
Apple’s iMovie ’11 – The Final Cut for 2011
It’s funny when I talk to fellow producers and directors in my studio, with large monitors with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 up on the screens, and I ask them how they like iMovie. Sometimes they chuckle, sometimes they have a blank stare, but almost always they have a look of surprise. Well, the joke is usually on them, as iMovie ’11 is one of the most powerful and useful editors on the Mac platform.

Retro Pop Culture Show “Decade Brigade” Launches
Myself and Sarah Wallace have been talking a while now about doing a show focused on retro pop culture and the time has come to unleash it to the airwaves! The show is called “Decade Brigade” and we discuss the TV shows, movies, toys, fashion and music from the past few decades. It’s a pretty cool walk down memory lane and every episode is sure to give you many flashbacks of days gone by. The format is pretty loose for now, we’ve only done a few episodes, but we are open to feedback and have even started answering listeners comments on the most recent show.
Read Jay-Z “Decoded”
2010 was a pretty amazing year for Franklin McMahon Studio. We did bigger projects than in the past, I assembled a really great team of video producers, media masters and web developers, got a chance to work with some of the coolest clients ever and kept very busy for the duration of the year. After a holiday breather it’s time to launch into 2011. I have a feeling it will be another big year for myself and a lot of people. I feel a great key element to success, and to abundance and financial success, is to constantly reinvent and expand into new areas.
One of the books I read over the holidays was Jay-Z’s “Decoded”. I always like to read biographies as opposed to business books. Granted I read business and marketing books, but so much of those these days is how to harness and leverage the Internet, a very new topic that allows a person to rise up very quickly regardless of talent (just get a good SEO person). I am more interested in the journey of someone who has a lot of talent, drive and ambition. Learning how they made the journey.
Ask Franklin – Choosing a DSLR Camera and Shooting Web Video
We did the first episode of “Ask Franklin”, the show where we answer your questions! This is a pretty popular topic with a lot of Maine photographers who ask me what camera I am shooting with, as well as emails I get often. Figured I would discuss DSLR cameras and talk about what I like for features. Also I talk about web video, another popular topic a lot of people ask me about. Check out the clip for the answers…
Ask Franklin – Franklin McMahon discusses what to look for in choosing a DSLR camera (it’s not megapixels), his favorite brand, hooking a DSLR camera up to a Mac/PC and setting up to shoot high quality web videos.
Ask Franklin – Color Theory for Web Design, Branding and Marketing
On this quick episode of Franklin McMahon Studio TV we discuss “Color Theory” and how important it is to pick the correct color theme for your website and marketing materials. We also show a beautiful website for creating your own color schemes for free.
For many of our clients one of the first things we discuss when designing a website is how we will construct the color theme. This video will give you a head start.
